Barcelona City Council rejects closing time extension

July 11, 2006

The spokesman of Barcelona City Council, Jordi Hereu, rejected yesterday the idea that music-playing bars and discos in Barcelona could be allowed to close at later times in order to avoid conflicts between customers returning home in the early hours of the morning.

Hereu stated that the local authority ‘will not permit’ an extension in the operating timetable of such establishments, something that the leaders of two groupings within the council, Imma Mayol (ICV) and Jordi Portabella (ERC), had proposed earlier on the same day.

He said that ‘for many years we have placed the emphasis on establishments complying with the timetable, which are very reasonable.’

He added that the idea put forth by Mayol needed to be studied ‘and was not a firm proposal.’
