Spanish bar owner gets jail sentence because of noise

MADRID, Spain: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a four-year jail term against a bar and restaurant owner over continuous noise from his eatery that drove neighbors to seek medical attention.
The tribunal confirmed a lower court ruling that found the Barcelona businessman guilty of an environmental crime and ordered him to pay damages ranging from €6,000 ($8,200) and €10,000 ($13,600) in damages to each of four families with homes in the same building.
The defendant’s name was not released.
The lower court said the restaurateur had failed to install soundproofing equipment as required by Barcelona city laws.
It said the noise caused insomnia and stress for the neighbors and that two of them had sought treatment for anxiety and depression.
Are anti-smoking laws going to get tougher?

It appears anti-smoking laws in Spain are just about to get tougher and the public is being prepared for it. This morning in ADN diario (Barcelona) and article reads: “The anti-smoking law has only saved 27€ per smoker”. Read more
Sushi must be frozen 24 hours before serving?

Early this morning, while enjoying my cofffee I’m reading through the ADN newspaper and I see a small news article titled: “Restaurants, obliged to freeze”. At first, I thought it was some mistake or some old law that isn’t really put into practice. Then searching the net I find Spanish Health Organisation articles confirming this new law (Dec 2006). Barcelona City Council rejects closing time extension

The spokesman of Barcelona City Council, Jordi Hereu, rejected yesterday the idea that music-playing bars and discos in Barcelona could be allowed to close at later times in order to avoid conflicts between customers returning home in the early hours of the morning. Read more
